A poker hand is always made out of 5 cards, no more, no less. The highest combination wins the pot.
| Hand of 5 cards | Description |
|---|---|
![]() High Card | High Cardn other words: nothing… Other than a card that could make a difference if the other player has nothing as well :-). The Ace is the highest card, followed by the King, the Queen, the Jack, the Ten (10) and so on to the Two (2) Ex: KJ542 beats QJ987 |
![]() The Pair | The PairThe simplest combination, we associate two cards of the same value. We also look at the value of other cards to separate between two identical pairs. A card that makes the difference is called: Kicker. ex : JJAK6 beats 99AKQ |
![]() Two Pairs | Two PairsWhen comparing hands with two pairs, the hand with the highest pair wins (two pairs Ace-2 beats two pairs King-10). The fifth card can also be used if the two pairs are the same for each player. In this example, two pairs 8-5, but the Ace kicker wins. ex : KK226 beats QQJJA |
![]() Three of a kind, Trips, Set | Three of a kind, Trips, Set3 cards of the same denomination. The denomination of the cards sets its strength but is case of a tie; we have to look at the value of the other 2 cards (kicker) ex : 88823 beats 444AK |
![]() Straight | Straight5 cards of mixed suits but in sequence. The A2345 straight is commonly accepted, it’s the smallest straight possible and is called a wheel. Straights are ranked by their highest last card. ex : 56789 beats 23456 |
![]() Flush | FlushNot black or red but cards of the same suit. The 4 suits in poker are spade, heart, diamond and club. We rank the flush by looking at its highest card. Then, we look at the next highest one, from the second card to the fifth. ex : 4678KA (suited) beats 789QA (suited) |
![]() Full House | Full HouseOne pair plus three of a kind. The rank of the Full House is determined by the rank of its three of a kind. ex : QQQ22 beats JJJAA |
![]() Four of a kind, Quads | Four of a kind, Quads4 cards of the same denomination. We also rank the quads between each other, quad aces being the highest and quad 2 being the lowest. The fifth card (kicker) can intervene in rare cases where the quads are of equal value between two players. ex : 88882 beats 5555K |
![]() Straight Flush | Straight FlushA straight of the same suit. ex : 45678 suited beats 34567 suited |
![]() Royal Straight Flush | Royal Straight FlushThe best poker hand. It’s a straight flush to the ace. There are only 4 (spade, heart, diamond, club) and they are of equal strength. |
