No-limit Texas Hold’em is a 7 card poker game (2 hole cards to each player and 5 community cards on the table).
The player to the left of the dealer posts the small blind.
The player immediately to his left posts the big blind, which is twice the amount of the small blind.
The dealer then gives each player 2 cards, starting with the small blind.
There is a round of betting before seeing the first 3 community cards (“pre-flop”). The player to the left of the big blind is first to talk. He can fold, call, raise a minimum of twice the big blind or go all-in for all his chips. The other players will act in turn and will have the option to fold, call, raise or go all-in as well. If the first player folded, in turn, the other players will have the same options as the first one.
Note: A player who is all-in puts all his chips in play at the same time.
The dealer, after the first round of betting, burns a card, face down on the table and opens up the first 3 community cards, called the flop. Each player must combine his hole cards with the community cards.
Then, the second round of betting starts. This time, the first player still in the hand and to the left of the dealer will be first to talk. Other players still in the hand will talk in turn. If more than one player remains in the hand, we go to the third round.
The dealer burns another card and opens up the fourth community card, it’s called the turn.
The third betting round follows the same scenario as the second one. If more than one player still remains in the hand, we go to the fourth and final round.
At last, the dealer burns another card and opens up the fifth community card, it’s called the river.
The hand is over when all the players have finished betting. If only one player remains, he wins the pot and is not obligated to show his 2 hole cards. If more than one player remains, the first player to the left of the dealer must show his hole cards. The other players then have the option to either fold or show their cards if they think they have a better hand. The pot will be awarded to the player with the best hand. In the event where two or more players have the same hand, the pot will be divided equally between those players.
Note: Every player can use 2, 1 or none of their hole cards to make their best 5 card hand.
In the event that a player has a doubt, he must call upon the tournament director to settle the issue.
