Live from the Palais des Congrès, Stage Tournament III, Season 2 2009-11-22
Good morning poker amateurs!
Registrations officially started at 7 this morning and the tournament should have started at 10am. But it’s now official, in spite of all the efforts put in by the tournament director in chief, Jacques Buteau, the tournament will start late. Indeed, Santa Claus didn’t give us any gifts when he scheduled his parade today, a few streets down from the Palais des Congrès. This in turn causes a few access difficulties and of course, some latecomers to the ragistration tables. Nevertheless, some players who had skipped breakfast take advantage of this delay to grab a bite and others to chit chat with old friends.
At 11:00, a few minutes into the tournament, there’s already a first victim, Yves Gagné from the Jolodium in Joliette. He receives the book "Les Maîtres du Poker" published by Éditions La Presse. He’ll be able to pick up a few poker secrets from it. Winners from today’s and tomorrow’s tournaments will also receive this gift from the author Simon Gravel, journalist at La Presse who is here to promote his book.
499 players are registered in the players’ tournament
145 players in the directors’ and owners’.
10,000 starting chips and blind levels every 30 minutes.
After about an hour, the tournament is running smoothly... We currently have 54 players out of the players’ tournament and 30 out of the directors’ and owners’.
It’s 12:35, 23 minutes left to the 400-800 blinds. There will be a break at the end of this level. Players are being eliminated right and left. Only 397 players left and 101 owners and directors. Maybe the players don’t want to miss the Santa Claus parade? ;-)
We are now on a 15 minute break... Right before the break, we had a clash of Titans at a directors’ and owners’ table... Étienne Proulx from Mont-Joli with pocket Aces in his hands, Sylvain Tardif with pocket K and Véronique Paulin from Caraquet in New-Brunswick with pocket Q. With cards such as these, we can smell the all-in... An explosive board of K-10-3-Q-J smashes the other 2 players’ hopes! And Étienne wins the pot with his unexpected straight!
Back from the break: blinds at 500-1000
346 participants left in the players’ and 92 in the directors’ and owners’ tournament.
It’s now 2:00pm. The tournament is entering its third hour and is cruising along. The eliminations have slowed down a bit. We are now 231 players and 66 directors and owners.
2:50pm: Blinds are now 1000-2000.
187 players left out of 499
52 directors and owners out of 145
At the start of this blind level, cheers from table 24 catches the attention... Jonathan Thériault raises to 5900 with pocket 10s. Denis Bergeron from St-Alexis-des-Monts re-raises to 20,000 with his pocket Jacks. Jonathan folds. Julien Fontaine from Farnham pushes all-in with his pocket Aces and his called by Denis. A Jack hits the flop... cheers of joy... but it is shortlived when an Ace shows up on the river...
It’s 3:25pm: 30 minute break
It’s the color-up. The average players’ chip stack is 32,800 chips and 37,200 for the directors and owners.
Here we go... 1500-3000 blinds
144 players left and 35 directors and owners
4:20pm... The cowboys of Christiane Blanchard from Valleyfield allows her to win a nie pot against the A-7 of Daniel St-Jean from L’Orignal in Ontario. The Ace shows up on the flop but the King on the river puts Christiane back on her saddle.
5:05pm... The tournament’s atmosphere is both serious and friendly. Through the clicking sound of the chips, we can hear some laughter here and there as well as people cheering... 86 players left and only 24 directors and owners.
The next report will be in 45 minutes, during the supper break...
It’s the supper break...
There are 61 players left and 18 directors and owners.
When we return from the break, the valiant fighters will be:

10:15am After a few welcoming words from Pierre Martel, Ligue manager, the famous "Shuffle up and deal" is uttered and the tournament starts!
528 registrations in the Players Tournament and 159 in the V.I.P. Directors and Owners.
Only a few minutes in and already Steve Moreau, director at the Palais des Quilles in Ste-Thérèse de Gaspé is eliminated. He gets the book "Les Maîtres du Poker" from Simon Gravel, journalist at La Presse, an enligthening read for sure...
After an hour into the tournament, the players’ field has been reduced to 463 and the directors’ and owners’ to 134.
11:50am... The blinds go up to 400-800.
404 players left, 113 directors and owners
12:15pm... 15 minute break... 352 players and 103 directors and owners left in the tournaments.
12:50pm... The Celebrities Tournament starts with...
Pierre Rinfret - Nanette Workman - André Boyer - Odette Tremblay - Marc Dupré - Anne-Marie Angélil - Jean-Pierre Angélil - Frédéric Pierre - Sophie Bourgeois - Jean-Nicholas Verreault - Jean L’Italien - Stéphane Fallu - Peter Miller - Wilfred LeBouthillier - Carl Marotte - David Jalbert - Pierre-Yves Lord - Jean-Thomas Jobin - Bruno Landry - Sébastien Dubé - Justobymylove Marc-André Fleury - Pierre Guénette - Patrick Huard - Marcel Leboeuf - Guy A. Lepage - Karl Dykhuis - Jean-Michel Anctil - Alexandre Morais - Sergio Momesso - Dany Poulin - Biz Loco Locas - Dan Georgesco Porn Flakes - Suzanne Lussier - Pierre Martel - Rémi Messier and Geneviève Denault from Loft Story
and 3 of our champions: Patrick Boyer, Jonathan Thériault and Gilles Plouffe.
and lets not forget Jean-Michel Anctil, winner of the Celebrities Tournament at the Montreal Casino last Saturday, and who has a $500 bounty on his head for the occasion...
2:00pm... Blinds are 800-1600. There are 241 players and 70 directors and owners left on the floor.
In the Celebrities Tournament, we have our first casualty, it’s David Jalbert whose pocket 9 didn’t resist to Jean-Nicholas Verreault’s quad 2’s... He is closely followed by Patrick Huard...
2:45pm... Only 16 minutes left to the 1000-2000 blinds.
Only 183 participants in the Players Tournament and 51 in the Directors and Owners
3:00pm... 30 minute break
Right before the break, we can hear a commotion goin on at a direcotrs’ and owners’ table when Michèle Myre, owner of the Penalty Sports Bar in Limoges, Ontario battles it out with her pocket 6’s against Sylvain Tardif from the Field’s in St-Léonard, New-Brunswick and his pocket 3’s. The 6-3-4-4-9 board had them screaming!
Meanwhile, André Boyer pushes all-in with his fluch draw and Guy A. Lepage takes a while, a long while to think about calling... He finally pushes his K-8 hand which paired the K on the flop but André hits his flush draw on the turn... The old saying "When in doubt, abstain" is not applicable in poker.
3:30pm... back from the break. Blinds are now 1500-3000, the average stack 33,000 chips and the Players Tournament has 160 players whereas the Directors and Owners has 42.
4:30pm... A bluff attempt turned bad?... With Q-K in hands, André Boyer is eliminated in 25th place by Jean-Michel Anctil holding 10-J in the Celebrities Tournament on a board of 10-7-2-9-A...
4:45pm... Blinds are 2500-5000. Still in the tournament: 98 players and 28 directors/owners.
5:00pm... Two of our champions clash in the Celebrities Tournament. On a flop showing a jack, Patrick Boyer, champion of last Saturday’s tournament at the Montreal Casino pushes all-in with A-J. He is called by Gilles Plouffe, champion scorer, with his pocket QQ. The board will not help him and Patrick is eliminated.
5:35... It’s the supper break. The players will take advantage of this break to have a bite to eat and relax before the evening begins, last stretch before victory.
72 players, 22 directors/owners and 15 celebrities are left.
6:05pm... Guy A. Lepage, champion of 3 Celbrities tournament, will not renew his exploit tonight... His stack already low in part because of the previous hand when his pocket KK hit the boat of Marc-André Fleury / Justobymylove. His reckless J-K is dealt the coup de grace by the same opponent’s quad 7’s
6:35pm... Back from the break. Blinds are 4000-8000.
7:15pm... It’s the final table for the Celebrities Tournament. It is comprised of: Nanette Workman, Stéphane Fallu, Marc-André Fleury, Jean-Pierre Angélil, Bruno Landry, Peter Miller, Geneviève Denault, Marc Dupré, Sergio Momesso and our celebrity: Gilles Plouffe.
7:50pm... Blinds are now 8000-16,000... 47 players left, 13 directors/owners... The bubble gets closer...
8:05pm... Blinds go up to 10,000-20,000.
The Players Tournament is at 42...
8:15pm... Gilles Plouffe just doubled up on Peter Miller in the Celebrities Tournament...
And it’s bubble time in the Players Tournament, we are in "tight" mode, and we now play hand by hand...
8:25pm... a lot of excitment, the bubble just busted! Pierre-Marc Lévesque from the bar L’Entrepôt in Baie Comeau is the unlucky one... he still wins a poker table, courtesy of Montreal Poker Store, as a consolation prize...
Congratulations to the 40 finalists who are now assured of o spot at the next CNPTL Stage Championship in May 2010!

8:55pm... There’s a break for the players... but it’s still the bubble for the directors and owners.
9:05pm... On the V.I.P side, Francis Bernier, director at the Faubourg in Québec busts the bubble under cheers from the crowd. What a cruel game!
Congratulations to the 10 directors and owners who won the entry into the next CNPT Stage Championship in May 2010!
Sergio Linhares - Bruno Coulombe - Sylvain Tardif - Daniel McGrath - Véronique Paulin - Denis Martel - Benoit Racette - Yanick Ranzi - Steven Cacchione - Sylvain Daigle
9:15pm... Back from the break, "we resume the hostilities" as per the expression of today’s mc, the symmpathetic Dominic Fugère.
9:30pm... Our famous superstar Gilles Plouffe just doubled up on Nanette Workman with Q-10 against A-K when the nice lady shows up on board... Go ! Go ! Go ! Gilles !
9:35pm... short-lived... Gilles with A-5 calls the all-in of Jean-Pierre Angélil wo shows A-Q and eliminates our celebrity when the traitor queen appears on the river! Congrats Gilles ! You can be proud of your performance!
It’s now the heads-up at the Celebrities’ table between Nanette Workman and Jean-Pierre Angélil... It promises to be captivating!
10:10pm... After having cut Nanette Workman’s stack a few hands before and leaving her with a measly 35,000 chips when blinds were 15,000-30,000, Jean-Pierre Angélil calls Nanette’s desperate J-9 all-in with a crushing pocket 10. A board of 2-2-5-2-8 gives Jean-Pierre Angélil a boat and the title of Stage IV Celebrities Tournament Champion. If René could have participated to this tournament, as planned, it would have been interesting to see a father/son duo at the same table... maybe next time... And in the mean time, congratulations to Jean-Pierre !
10:20pm... In the Players tournament: 14 players and the heads-up is under way in the V.I.P. Tournament between Yanick Ranzi and Daniel McGrath from the Vieux Rafiot, New-Brunswick.
10:30pm... Yanick Ranzi’s pocket 8 gives him the victory and the title of V.I.P. Stage IV, Season 2 Champion and the first prize of a trip to Las Vegas with the buy-in to a $1,000 tournament during the WSOP. Bravo Yanick!
10:45pm... We are now at the players’ final table.
12:45am... We start the heads-up between Raymond Boisvert and Jean-Philippe Leclerc.
The finalists have been eliminated in the following order:
10.Sébastien Gagnon
9. Claude Patenaude
8. Daniel Bourassa

6. Alain Rondeau
5. Guy Pepin

3. Dominic Carignan
1:00am... The heads-up ends up with Raymond Boisvert as the big winner of the Stage IV, Season 2. He leaves with the Champion ring. Kudos Raymond !
